Guest Preacher: Karmen Michael Smith- March 15
Karmen Michael Smith is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary, Founder of Poor Culture, and a 2025 inductee into the Martin Luther King Jr. Preachers and Scholars Hall of Fame at Morehouse College.
A founder, author, strategist, and public theologian, he helps leaders reclaim sovereign judgment — the capacity to see, decide, and build without fragmentation or external permission. His work centers on endurance over spectacle and coherence over scale. Through his writing, private advisory work, and his weekly dispatch The Signal, Smith exposes the distortions shaping modern leadership and calls institutions back to structural integrity. He is the founder of Foragé Atelier, a luxury lifestyle brand steeped in Black Southern heritage.

Come along on a walk through Santa Barbara as poet laureate Sojourner Kincaid Rolle shares about the rich Black history of the Central Coast.
Readers may be surprised to learn that the California coast was once home to a thriving Black community similar to Tulsa’s Black Wall Street, called the Haley corridor. Children and adults of all ages will be introduced to concepts ranging from restrictive covenants to gentrification, and the urgency of community archiving and preservation.
