Deacon
LeRoy G. Potts, Jr.
LeRoy Potts has worshipped at Riverside since the 1990s and has served on the deacon board since 2013. Originally from Philadelphia, he moved to Washington D.C., to work for the late U.S. Senator Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania. Over the years, he served as a tutor in Riverside’s afterschool program and served on Riverside’s endowment committee, the Interim Pastor Transition team, and the Pastor Search Committee. Currently, he is a director in the Office of Strategy, Policy, and Plans in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). His office is charged with preventing the importation of goods mined, produced, or manufactured with forced labor from entering the U.S.

Prior to his role at DHS headquarters, he was the Research Division chief in the Refugee, Asylum, and International Operations Directorate at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, DHS. Before joining DHS, he served over 17 years as a U.S. Department of State foreign affairs officer. Among his various roles, he was deputy director of the office responsible for the State Department’s annual human rights report, and he represented the U.S. as a delegate at the United Nations. He enjoys scuba diving and genealogical research and is deeply grateful to be a part of Riverside’s diverse and welcoming congregation, which is dedicated to serving the community.
